So here’s the final .psd file for Kariis Vara, along with the final .jpg.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions comments or concerns.

In the .psd you’ll notice a file layer title FX. This houses all the special effects, like light blooms and lens grime, etc. So turn those off as needed for whatever your use requires. I’v also included the gray scale background as an alternate to the sky. When you flip that on the effects will be more noticeable against the dark background.

And of course Vara is on his own layer. Just make sure if you pull him off and use him elsewhere, you bring the glow layer along with him to get that bloom effect.

Cheers!

I am highly satisfied with all of your final inclusions and adjustments! This is outstanding and reaches a level of completion for the character that I think conveys exactly what we were shooting for.

Thank you for including the options for us in the psd (effects and such), always a big help.

Great job man. Thanks again.

Thanks so much Jason!

He was a fun character to work on. I imagine if/when you guys ever get to doing 3D printouts of this guy he’s gonna look especially cool.

I just watched a making of preview today from Steve Wang and his team (they do all the giant statues at Blizzon con every year, among other things)…

…and his previous Tyrael statue from a few years back is a pretty cool indicator of what Vara could one day look like in the round

Thanks for sharing the video. I was at BlizzCon 2010 and 2011. I was able to see these guys’ work in person with the Queen of Blades statue. They are extremely good. The idea of Vara levitating in a sculpture would be made possible very similarly to the way they did that with Tyrael. This is what I plan for us to do as well; we are in communication with a miniatures company in China that will be able to provide the level of detail we are looking for. I should be getting samples from them in the near future. I’m excited to begin the 3D models for the kings.

Speaking of which, I think I mentioned this to you before but we haven’t really gone into much detail. I will need to start scheduling the work for the orthographics for all the kings and the Revenants soon to hand over to our 3D modeler. I’d like for us to always start with the marketing character, then revisit the character to create its orthographics; so we have Kynazarr and Vara available right now to create orthographics for. Please let me know if you will be able to do these for us; if so I imagine we will start with Kynazarr.

Oh very cool! I don’t know a ton about all of Blizzard’s IP’s but I’m familiar with a few characters here and there. I image it was a blast getting to see these giant pieces of art in person!Sure thing. Ortho’s are very doable. It works out fine that we’ll have the marketing pieces done before the ortho’s because I’ll have a great idea of what the front looks like. It’ll just be a matter of designing out the backs when we get to that stage. You’ll also want to think about the posing these sculptures will be in, as I image they could be entirely different from the illustrations we’ve done so far.

Also, if it’s possible I’d like to be in touch with both you and the modeler when we get to that point so if anything isn’t perfectly clear in the turnarounds, he/she can point out the problem spots and we can address those areas specifically. I had to do a few of these when I was working at a studio here in Denver and being able to speak directly with the modeler after the designs had been signed off by the Art Director was extremely helpful.

When are you thinking you’d like to move forward with orthos? I probably wont be able to commit to any additional work until after the first of the year so if we can hold off until at least January if not later that would be great. But let me know what you had in mind.

Cheers!
