Hey team!

So some progress on the cover art. This is sort of block out stage to make sure we’re hitting on big shapes, color and lighting.

All the architecture at this point is modeled, textured, and lit. There’s a lot of over-painting that needs to happen to get rid of seams, add edge wear and additional textures, soften shadows, add water to the base of the star globe, and obviously position Apsu on the surface. Once that’s take care of in the next update I’ll move onto the background and get the city structures and Sentinel figures placed on the ground and out in the water. And I’d also like to play around with some of the cloud shapes to make it feel a bit more fantastical.

Other than that, we’re just moving right along. Let me know what you think!

Cheers!

Oh! And arches. I still want to add arches between the columns. Almost forgot to mention that. Along with a few more bevels and ridges in places here and there.

This is looking great dude! Before you get too far I think you, Jason, and I should discuss the overall color scheme of the piece.Right now your on the purple/orange side with the deep sky and the copper tones in the architecture. To align better with the colors of the title, you will need to shift the piece closer to a blue/yellow scheme. There can be adjustments made to the title, but I think this is a good time to hammer this out and help to lock down the dominant color palette of the game.I’m out this week, but could give some feedback on your progress occasionally, however, I would love to meet after we get settled. I just wanted to communicate my thoughts before you got too far along.Anthony

Hey guys. This looks really cool, I love the architecture. I’ll post more detailed thoughts later but I wanted to mention something real quick after reading Anthony’s post. I don’t know if this will help, but remember that the Sentinels face glows a blue light. I think this will help to bring more blue into the piece. I’ve been meaning to mention this for awhile and it’s been on my mind cause I think it would look really cool to see those blue lights shining in the distance in addition to the Sentinel shapes!

@ Anthony: Agreed. I think now would be a good time to hammer out the palette :)I know you said you’re out this week, so I’m just going to throw these up as initial talking points. I basically added a gradient map to the buildings and background to help saturate the blue/yellow spectrum. But we should go over this in more depth at your next availability. The earlier I can get a pallet sorted out the easier the over-painting will go.Good call Jason. I didn’t realize they were all constantly lit blue. I thought that might have only been for the active Sentinels (ie: Wayword) At any rate I think we can include pinpricks of light without too much trouble. Thanks guys. Looking forward to your additional notes Jason, and Anthony when you’re back so we can all discuss color. Cheers!

Alright. I hoped to get this to you sooner, but I had to think of a solution before posting. So, as I said the architecture to this is outstanding and I’m on board with this style 100%, its really cool. My concern is how much the structure had moved further into the image.  I’ve been struggling with this because it looks like you have put a good amount of work into this and I didn’t want to lose progress; but I think I have a good idea that can fix it with the least amount of rework.See attached image. This idea fixes two things. The first is we don’t want the logotype to get covered up by the structure. The second is I want to see a bit more of the landscape like in the sketch. I didn’t want you to take the entire left structure and just move it down though, because I like how you placed the waterfalls on the outer curve, and lowering the structure would cover up the leftmost waterfall. Instead, if you look at the image, we can take the orange highlighted area and move it down a bit instead, and I think it actually makes it look a bit more natural. I know this might mean we need to change the pool a little bit, but please let me know what you think. The second thing I wanted to talk about is the right structure. In the sketch we have the sentinels going off the right side of the frame. With the structure this tall we may not have this effect. A way to fix this is just to shorten the pillars without moving the base of the structure at all (again because I like where the waterfalls are). This is not as important though, if the structure doesn’t look as good with shorter pillars we can leave it how it is.The final thing is the clouds. I look forward to seeing you more fantastical clouds as you say, but I just wanted to mention that with the way the clouds are now we may have trouble seeing the sentinels? Its to early to say, but I just wanted us to keep this in mind because I really would like for the sentinels to stand out as much as feasibly possible (given that they will be so far out there and may already be hard to see) Of course just let me know what your thoughts are regarding all this.Fantastic work as always! Thank you.

Short and sweet response: not a problem. For the left structure we can just make the alteration like you demonstrated and the pool/star-globe ring we can just make a bit smaller. I like the overlap it creates in your example, but it’s just a tad bit much. Easy FixSame with the right structure. I’ll just reduce the pillar height, drop the dome to match, and re-render.The Sentinels are going to be tricky, but I’ll get them in there. The clouds shapes are definitely going to get additional attention because, like you said, they can’t obscure all the Sentinels below.I’ll be sure to include these revisions along with the city structures below and an Apsu placeholder on the next update this weekend.

Thanks much guys! Really enjoying how this one is coming together so far.
